it's been 12 years since 1896: ang pagsilang was materialized to commemorate the centennial year anniversary of our philippine indepencence and yet still i believe that this collection of recordings is one of the best, if not the best, album ever produced in the local music scene.
the album is a collaboration of the best band and artists of the '90s singing phrases to our heroes who died to gain freedom from our colonizers. it is also a story-telling of our situation after 100 years. as the cliche saying goes, "history repeats itself". modern suppressers still lurks all over the place. oppression still occurs.
poverty, graft and corruption, oppression, difference of religion, beliefs, philosophy and ideologies are some of the battles that our heroes fought about hundred years ago. but have their efforts gone in vain? i hope not.
the songs and artists included in this album is instrumental to call for a change. at the time, bands were so prominent and mainly caters to audience on their teens. the album, just by listening to it, somehow awaken their nationalistic points of view and aspirations which persuade them to get involved, have advocacies to fight for and become vigilant to what's happening around. no wonder there were so many young activists right now who fights for different causes and expressing hope for a better philippines. and if you'd ask them, most of them were opm band enthusiasts. sounds familiar? yep. myself included.
one thing i like in this album is that, it is the first and only time i hear my fave sugar hiccup vocalist, melody del mundo, sing in tagalog. yes. the line, "umaawit para sa hirap na dinanas nyo...", in the first track, "hanggang ngayon", is her. apparently, the song is one of my fave in the album, because apart from having great lyrics and arrangement, most of the great bands then take part in recording of this song. that includes, eraserheads, rivermaya, sugar hiccup, yano, after image, alamid, agaw agimat, grace nono, color it red, the youth and francis m. collectively called themselves, "siglo."
a little trivia, though, i decided to write an article on this as a post-national heroes day remembrance, also a salute to the band of the '90s which one of them is returning for a one-night reunion gig tonight, yes, the eraserheads and to mark the end of august 2008.
