There's a latest trend in the Philippine music scene to translate western songs to our native language, which is Filipino. The translated song will later be called, "Tagalized version." Tagalized because Filipino language is derived from one of the Philippines' dialects which is "Tagalog."
One famous Tagalized song right now is Miss Ganda's "Payong", a rendition from Rihanna's original and a smashing hit, "Umbrella."
DJ Sundalong Bata has got his own version of Flo-rida's "Low", entitled, "Lawlaw" or "Low-rise." Miss Ganda and DJ Sundalong Bata was launched together in an all-Tagalized-songs album called, "HipRap" which was released under Warner Music Philippines this year. The album features tagalized cover of "Beautiful Girls" (Sean Kingston), "Crank Dat Soulja Boy" (Soulja Boy), "Clumsy" (Fergie) and "Please Don't Stop the Music" (Rihanna) and more.
There were also foreign songs which are translated or being adapted to other dialects like, Ilonggo, Bisaya, Kapampangan and more. The Visayan version of "Low" is quite popular in terms of airplay over the Tagalized one. "Ojo Kaluguran Daka" is a Kapampangan song from "Sometimes When We Touch" originally by Dan Hill and Rique Franks.
I asked what the title means to my Kapampangan tita when she was in Manila. She told me, "Ojo" is like terms of endearment similar to "honey", "darling" or "sweetheart."
"Kaluguran Daka" means "I Love You" or "Mahal Kita" in Tagalog/Filipino.
Since, western songs were not in any way rare in translated covers and I am a self-confessed Asian music (of any genre) fanatic, I thought of making a playlist about Pinoy covers and versions, translations of Asian songs such as Chinse, Korean, Japanese et.al. and vice versa. I searched for materials in my mp3 files which I compiled since 2002 and put them all together in one new folder that I labeled, Pinoy Versions - Asian Music Edition.
01> "Saigo no Iiwake" (The Last Excuse) by Tokunaga Hideaki is the original Japanese version of one of well-loved Tagalog songs in the 90s, that is, "Ikaw Pa Rin" by Ted Ito. Apparently, Ted Ito is also of Japanese descent who came to Philippines to become a singer.
02> "Remember Me" is originally done by a popular Japanese band composed of Nobuteru Maeda, Michiya Haruhata, Hideyuki Kakuno and Ryoji Matsumoto, collectively called, Tube. It was first released in Japan on 21st December 1988. Renz Verano's Tagalog version of "Remember Me" on the other hand, became known in the 90s.
03> "Because I'm A Girl" (Yuhja E ni Ggah) is a song performed originally by a Korean pop female trio, K.I.S.S. composed of Mini, Jini and Umji. It was an instant hit from their debut and only album with the same title in 2002 which was also attributed to its Music Video (MV) portrayed by Goo Hye Jin and Shin Hyun Joon. The plot is about a beautiful woman who do hairdressing for a living who fell in love with a photographer. Things were getting along well until an accident happens.
A chemical used to make photos was spilled all over her face which made her blind. The photographer gave his own eyes to the girl unknowing. The girl learned about it after the operation but she never saw the guy again. The girl became a famous print model and one day she saw a blind man with a dog who leads him in the road. That man is the photographer who she fell in love with. He dropped the photo he's holding and when the girl took it in the ground, it is then she realized that it was her picture, shot the first time they see each other in a photo shoot. The song and video became so famous that there are so many versions worldwide was made.
In 2006, Roxanne "Roxie" Barcelo, came out with a Tagalog version of the song. It doesn't have much airplays in the radio but pretty famous to those who love the original Korean version.
In 2007, another Korean version sung by 2nB surfaced but unlike Kiss' original, I think it's less dramatic because of the RnB flavour in it.

04> "First Love" is included in Utada Hikaru's debut album of the same title in 1999. It became a soundtrack for the J-dorama, Majo no Jouken of the same year. For me, it is the Japanese counterpart of K.I.S.S.' "Because I'm A Girl" in terms of popularity. English version was sung by Jessa Zaragoza. Nothing much was known with this version. All I know is that in year 2002, when I was searching for HikKi's song, it came out in the search result, too.Now, I'm thinking it's just a digital release because I don't remember them playing it in the radio either. And when I searched for Jessa's discography, "First Love" was not included in any of her albums.
05> "Reason" by Jung Il Young is a soundtrack from the Korean drama "Autumn in My Heart", a project by Yoon Suk Ho, in year 2000. Its Tagalog/Filipino version is performed by a female singer as opposed to its original male singer. Her name is Carmela "Faith" Cuneta. She sung most of the songs in the "Endless Love - The Album", the official soundtrack of Autumn in my Heart" in the Philippines in 2003.
06> "Ulmana Naega" is sung by Yoon Chang Gun, also a soundtrack from "Autumn in my Heart" while its counterpart was once again performed by Carmela "Faith Cuneta" dubbed as "Umiibig Na."
07> "Gido" (Prayer), also from "Autumn in my Heart" soundtrack is also sung by Jung Il Young. Raine sung the Tagalog/Filipino version entitled, "Kahit Na."
08> "From the Beginning Until Now" by Ryu Shi Won is the main theme for "Winter Sonata" in 2002. Carmela's Tagalog version is "Di Ko Na Kaya" which was included in the official Philippines soundtrack released in 2003, "Endless Love 2 - The Album."
09> "My Memory" by Ryu Shi Won also from "Winter Sonata" had two versions in Tagalog/Filipino. "My Memory (Of Him)" by Denise Laurel and "My Memory (Of Her)" by Infuse.
10> "Pangako" is a soundtrack from the blockbuster movie of Regine Velasquez, "Pangako Ikaw Lang" in 2001. Regine also sung the theme song of the movie. When the Korean drama, "Glass Shoes" is aired in the country, one of its soundtrack, which is "For Your Love" sung by Jang Hye Jin made a little controversy for Ogie Alcasid, the composer of "Pangako" did not have any idea his song had a Korean version and was used in the said drama.
11> "Shine" is a song performed by Regine Velasquez as a promotional theme song in a skin whitening product in 2005. Its' Taiwanese version came out as a soundtrack for Barbie Hsu and Show Luo's series, "Corner with Love" in 2007.
12> "Wo Nan Guo" (I'm Sad) became famous along with the Taiwanese series, "My MVP Valentine". In the Philippines, it was shown in 2002. Due to its popularity, a Taglish (Tagalog-English) version was released by Renz Verano in 2003.
13> "Peng You" is a song by Emil Chow. Kim Chiu recorded her Chinese-Tagalog/Filipino version with Juris Fernandez (MYMP) inside the Big Brother House in 2006. In 2007, Kim Chiu released her debut album, "Gwa Ai Di", and a new and solo version of the song was included in it.
14> "One Love" is sung by a Korean band, Loveholic. It was used as a theme song for the last installment of Yoon Suk Ho's Endless love series, "Spring Waltz", in 2006. There was also a humming version for this but not included in the original sountrack. The English version was performed by Acel Bisa Van Ommen, former vocalist of Moonstar 88.
15> "Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin" (The Moon Represents my Heart) is considered as one of the classic and Chinese songs. Made famous during the 80's by Teresa Teng. Miss Teng died of Asthma in 1995. Kim Chiu's version is also the same only it sounds more youthful and cheesy because of the RnB arrangement.
16> "Answer the Phone", originally done by a Korean performer, Shin Mina. Roxanne "Roxie" Barcelo sung the English version. It was released in the album, "Roxie" along with the Tagalog version of "Because I'm A Girl." Now I'm wondering if the other 3 songs (the album have 10 tracks, the other 5 tracks were minus ones) in her album were also from Korean originals.
17> "Pasulyap-sulyap", sung by Tootsie Guevarra, was released with the album, "The Power of Four" in 2003. "Power of Four" because it showcases 4 artists in one album. The other three were, Carol Banawa, Jolina Magdangal and Roselle Nava. In 2006, Mayo Suzuki, a half-Japanese, half Filipina popstar came to the Philippines to promote her album, "Telling My Heart." I wouldn't know about her funky, jpop version of Tootsie's original if it had not for my Kuya and my Mom. They saw Mayo Suzuki at the mall, well, yeah, promoting her album and doing a little show for the audience afterwhich an autograph-signing of her CD. Yeah, my kuya brought her CD and had it signed by Mayo. A little trivia: Mayo looks like my brother's girlfriend at the time.
18> "Qing Fei De Yi" (Can't help Falling in love With You) by Harlem Yu Chen Chin. Who wouldn't know that song? It's the famous opening theme song of the famous Taiwanese drama, "Meteor Garden", acted in by the famous Barbie Hsu and F4 (Jerry Yan, Vic Zhou, Ken Zhu, Vanness Wu) in year 2000. MG was shown year 2002 in the Philippines. The Tagalog/Filipino version entitled, "Can't Help Fallin'" by Michael Josh Santana became a little controversial at the time it was used as a theme song of MG in the country and was only played for 2 episodes due to copyright issues.
19> "Ni Yao De Ai" (The Love You Want) is a Penny Dai original, closing theme and love theme for "Meteor Garden." Michelle Ayalde sung the Tagalog version of it entitled, "Ang Hanap Ko Ay Iyong Pag-ibig."
Man, it sucks! She shouldn't have done that!
20> "Second Romance" is included in the soundtrack of Yoon Suk Ho's "Summer Scent" in 2003. Carmela "Faith" Cuneta's version is "Suko Na Ang Puso". It is in the album, "Endless Love 3-The Album."
21> My list could have done at 20 if it hadn't for my pal, James, who suggested "Manatsu no Kajitsu" by Southern All Stars, also known by abbreviations Southern Sazan or SAS, a Japanese pop rock band formed in Kanagawa, led by singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Keisuke Kuwata. Their lineup has consisted of Kuwata, lead vocals and electric and acoustic guitars, vocalist and keyboardist Yuko Hara (who is also Kuwata's wife), bassist Kazuyuki Sekiguchi, drummer Hiroshi Matsuda, percussionist Hideyuki Nozawa, and former guitarist Takashi Omori (who has left the band in 2001).
In 1990, Kuwata directed the film called "Inamura Jane". The movie was not able to receive positive reaction, but its music was highly succeeded. Its soundtrack album, performer was credited to "Southern All Stars and All Stars", reached #1 on Japanese chart and sold over million copies. Finally it became the best-selling soundtrack album in Japan. "Manatsu no Kajitsu", a song written by Kuwata for his own film was released as a lead single from the album, and climbed top-five on the chart. In 1991, Hong Kong singer Jacky Cheung covered this song in Chinese, and fulfilled huge commercial success in several Asian countries. Now, this romantic pop ballad is considered as one of their fan favorites. This soundtrack have included another highlight "Kibou no Wadachi". Regardless of appeared in the album only, the song is well-known as one of the Southern All Stars' significant songs.
In 2006, the 12 Girls Band from Japan released their instrumental version of the song and this year (2008), EXILE released a Pop version of "Manatsu no Kajitsu."
The Tagalized version, "Isang Tanong, Isang Sagot", was sung by Donna Cruz in the late 90s.

And if you ask me why Tagalized versions were so widespread and popular, well I could tell you many reasons but I'll just leave it up to you, readers. i know you have your own opinions regarding Pinoy versions.
